Flora Köln

Anamorphic

My very first steps at anamorphic photography.

The Flora in Cologne, formally known as the Flora and Botanical Garden Cologne, is a historic and scenic botanical garden that has been cherished by the city since its establishment in 1864. Covering 11.5 hectares near the Rhine River, it combines elegant 19th-century landscape design with diverse plant collections from around the world. At its center stands a grand glass palace, an architectural highlight that hosts events and exhibitions.

Within the Flora, visitors can explore themed sections representing different climates and ecosystems. Tropical greenhouses house exotic orchids and towering palms, while alpine gardens feature plants suited to cooler, rocky environments. The rose gardens, rhododendron valley, and Mediterranean gardens each offer seasonal blooms that fill the space with color and fragrance. The Japanese garden creates a peaceful, Zen-inspired atmosphere, and there are also herb and medicinal gardens where visitors can learn about plants with culinary and healing properties.

Beyond its plant collections, the Flora serves as a haven for local wildlife, attracting birds, butterflies, and pollinators, which contribute to biodiversity within the urban landscape. Throughout the year, the garden hosts events, educational programs, and festivals, like the popular Lichterfest, which transforms the garden with enchanting nighttime illuminations. Conservation is also a core focus at the Flora, where endangered plant species are preserved and research collaborations with global institutions promote biodiversity.

Open year-round, the Flora offers unique experiences in every season, blending natural beauty, architectural elegance, and a commitment to conservation and education for all who visit.
