Aachen, also known as Aix-la-Chapelle, is a historic city in western Germany near the borders of Belgium and the Netherlands. It is renowned for its rich history and cultural significance, particularly during the Middle Ages. Aachen was the favored residence of Charlemagne, who made it the center of his Carolingian Empire. The city’s most famous landmark is the Aachen Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which houses Charlemagne’s Palatine Chapel. Aachen is also known for its technical university, RWTH Aachen University, one of the leading institutions in Europe for engineering and technology. The city has a charming old town with narrow streets, historic buildings, and thermal springs, reflecting its legacy as a Roman spa town.
